Goodbye Epson, your cartridges have killed you

Discuss on ooVoo

I was shocked to to see the bill for a new set of cartridges for our Epson Stylus Photo RX580 All-in-One Printer, over $91.  The machine was originally around $400.

What have I learned from this?  As a nimble consumer and the entrepreneur, independent worker I am, I am shopping around for a printer that does 2 things, 1- does not leave me stranded when one color ink is low and I need to print a black and white page, 2- doesn’t cost a 4th of the original equipment price for ink.  So far, it seems Canon is doing a better job.  I’ve been using Epson for two decades but too much is too much.

You can also send you comment to Andrea Zoeckler who who is the Vice President, Service and Sales Operations in the U.S. to let her hear how you feel about being held ransom like this.  Many people have filed suits against Epson, rightfully claiming the printers force you to change cartridges when there is still enough ink.

Again, greed turns me away from a company.

Try to try

Discuss on ooVoo

I would like to throw you a challenge.  Try to try.

Seriously now, simply try to do something, anything.  Not clear about what I’m saying?  Let’s put into context.  Put a pen or any other object in front of you and try to pick it up.  Do it.

Did you pick it up?  Well then, you didn’t “try” to pick it up, you picked it up.  Try again until you have an Ah ha moment

There no such thing as trying.  You cannot try to do something or anything.  It just makes no sense and cannot happen.  You eothr do or not. When we use the word “try”, we don’t usually mean yes or no but maybe.  The Thesaurus gives us some nice alternatives to the verb try: attempt, endeavor, venture, make an effort, exert oneself, strive, do one’s best, do one’s utmost, move heaven and earth; undertake, aim, take it upon oneself; informal have a go, give it one’s best shot, bend over backwards, bust a gut, do one’s damnedest, pull out all the stops, go all out, knock oneself out; formal essay.  You get the message.

Trying is such a strange word.  Let’s replace it with either do or don’t or any of the verbs mentioned above.  The rest is just discernment.

Spokeo.com and you, beware

Discuss on ooVoo

Totally out of the coaching arena but someone asked me to go to Spokeo.com and type in my name.  Go ahead, try it now before you read the rest.

So you did it?  What did you think about it?  Was the information correct?  In my case, and thankfully, it isn’t.  But for many people, the information is correct.  Not only it divulges your home address, which can be awkward for professionals, it can also list your home price (and will vary depending on household members).

Now let’s go and write about it on Facebook :)

Help Nick with a session

Discuss on ooVoo

I am looking for three people to record a session for my ACP certification from my University.

Your names will not be used, the only people who will listen are interested in what I say, not what you say. Lastly, if you feel awkward at the end of the call or wish not to record, I will delete it on the spot.

And lastly, if you help me out I will do the same for you. I will give you three extra session, free of charge.

Googbye Gerry Rafferty

Gerry Rafferty passed away yesterday in England. He wrote such songs as “Baker Street”, co-wrote “Stuck in the Middle with You” and one of my favorites “Right Down The Line”.

He was a curious ,musicians, unlike many, he shun celebrity. He was a very interesting person and his early music was different from the rest, even though it is pop.

RIP Gerry.

Coaching In Second Life

Discuss on ooVoo

Had my first impromptu coaching session in Second Life.

For those of you who do not know what Second Life is, check it out here.  In a nutshell, it is a place where people gather online and build a visual avatar that moves through a visual landscape.  Many groups exist and even some businesses hold meetings and trainings there.  I am part of a group called Mystic Academy.

A person asked me what coaching was, so we took the opportunity to have on the fly and via IM a coaching session.  As much as communicating through IM was challenging at first, the session interesting, as they always are.  The person was going through similar processes I am currently going through.

That is another amazing aspect of coaching, clients reflect what you are going through or still dealing with.  It’s a symbiotic relationship where the coaches does not impose their hidden agenda.  Well, at least the real coaches don’t.

Finding Your Little Piece Of Heaven Where You Already Are

Discuss on ooVoo

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village. A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. “Not very long.” they answered in unison.

“Why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families.

“But what do you do with the rest of your time?” “We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children and take siestas with our wives. In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. We have a full life.”

The tourist interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?”

“With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City!  From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.”

“How long would that take?”

“Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years” replied the tourist.

“And after that?”

“Afterwards? Well my friend, that’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the tourist, laughing. “When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!”

“Millions? Really? And after that?” asked the fishermen.

“After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and
enjoying your friends.”

And the moral of this story is:

Know where you’re going in life. You may already be there

What To Do When People Slander You

Discuss on ooVoo

There is nothing more frustrating than someone hiding in the ether the Internet is and slanders you.

Yesterday, I received a Facebook email I thought was a bad joke at first.  This person I have never met accuses me of doing things that just cannot happen.  While that particular account could have been hacked, it is nonetheless a disturbing event.  So the reactions are as follows: make a huge stink, alert everyone and go into defense mode, or think things through and calm down?

If the latter does not come naturally for me, it is what I did.  I decided to talk a few deep breaths, then lit a few candles and burned incense.  I started to meditate and asked questions.  While the answers weren’t revelations, they were soothing and felt calm deep within the peace inside.  I decided to tackle the problem logically.  I documented everything, filed an abuse report, looked the person online and in Facebook and finally sent emails to her friends to clarify who she is.

It isn’t easy dealing with such a negative thing, especially when you know it isn’t true but sometimes we are called to deal with absurd situations.  We must take adversity in stride, knowing we are right and either someone is having sick fun, or just is deranged.  One step at a time…

In the meantime, my feelings toward Facebook don’t change.  It isn’t a great tool.  You end up wasting more time than it is worth.  If Facebook is great are rekindling old friendships, that is all I can say about it.  It makes us lazy, accept friendships at the push of a button instead of going out there and meeting people in real life…
