Coaching Tickles Me

Coaching tickles me.  It might sound strange but coaching is such a challenge, it delights me to walk that fine line when I am with a client not to tell them what to do but to strive for understanding and revealing what they want to do.

How do you achieve this?  That is the trick to masterful coaching, you must arrive at a greater understanding and awareness as to the “who” of the person you are coaching.  And there also lies an interesting part, when tend to think of coaching as sports coach in high school, pushing students to physically excel through drills and exercises.

Coaching has two distinctive phases.  The first one is getting to the core of who you are.  I aptly named my coaching practice Tap The Source, because without doing so, you are aiming in the dark.  Once there is a greater awareness around the “who” you are, finding out what you want to do, where you would like to be and in general, answering any personal questions becomes so easy.

In many ways, coaching is the reflection of the paradigm shift our societies are facing.  We are at the end of a system that focused on survival with brute force.  People were offered little choice, work to survive.  Now there is much wealth built and people can actually start to choose.  The problem is without knowing oneself, what does one chooses for one self?

This is where coaching becomes an invaluable tool.  Masterful coaching is about having a coach with no agenda, holding back the urge to tell the client what to do and striving for uncovering who the client and how the client wants to go about it.  After all, who knows you better than yourself.  What a fantastic time it is to live now days.
