New York’s Street Shows

And then there are the loonies.   NY wouldn't be NY without the people who put on a show, sometimes unknowingly.  I'm talking about the people who carry conversations with themselves, those singing out loud alone at the top of their lungs, those crying, laughing, singing, dancing and just doing things "normal" people won't do.  Strangers carrying conversation by themselves, talking to some unknown listener, sometimes even God.  Carrying full fledge conversations with some invisible audience, playing music in subways without instruments, cursing at no one in particular on the streets, laughing hysterically alone, bumbed out or face in the gutter.  It took me less than an hour to see my first loony on the subway platform fresh from my arrival.  NY wouldn't be NY without loonies.

I was pleasantly surprised to see hybrids popping up everywhere as taxis.  Ford Hybrid Escape with their great 33mpg in city driving and of course, the Uber hybrid poster child, the Prius.  It seems I left a sea of yellow uniform Chevy and Ford marshmallow suspension rides to 20% if not more hybrid, and rising.  Bloomberg wants more and wants the miles per gallon rating to go up to 25, then 30 in two years!  I can remember how nauseous we felt after a night of libations with our friends, returning home on those soft suspensions for those big heavy metal taxi made in Detroit.  They made us feel nauseous despite the drivers' highly entertaining telephones conversation, it seem with no one.  I look forward to a hybrid ride in New New York.  No, NY has changed after all…
