When Is Gas Too Much?

Discuss on ooVoo

It's a question that has been asked over and over in the past, when will gas be expensive enough for people to react and take action?

They said $4 a gallon would be the sticker shock and it might just be so.  With prices now well above $4, $4.79 in and around Los Angeles for premium, some people are taking action.  While running on the treadmill yesterday at the gym I saw bunch of people protesting on the news.  It was interesting to see what it takes to get people to act.  Apparently, $4.75 is what it takes in LA.

A bunch of folks in and around Hollywood came up with a movement called: Kiss My Gas!  If you recall a little while back on the blog, I spoke about how useless boycotting gas stations for one day was.  I found this movement showed people grabbing their power back by effective and direct boycotting of one company at a time.  That makes more sense since it would hurt their bottom line.  Kiss My Gas has decided to tackle the most obnoxious oil company Exxon/Mobil who proudly displays the highest profits any American companies are making in our slow economy.  To make things even dumbfounding and they are receiving  healthy government subsidizations pumped directly by our own taxes.  In other words, we pay taxes that help oil companies make more money by taxing us a second time.  Talk about insane!  For one month, Kiss My Gas wants you to boycott Exxon/Mobile.

Hum, fair enough, it's a good idea but don't take Exxon/Mobile for idiots either.  For one thing, one month won't do that much.  Try boycotting them all the time, period.  I do.  I never go there.  Why should I when Arco has good gas at 30 cents on an average cheaper?  As far as I know, the only gas that is better quality is Chevron.  Also don't write off Exxon/Mobile too quickly yet.  Exxon is planning on selling its gas stations and get out of retail, quoting the profit margins are too thin.  Please, hold back the smirks and laughs.  Nontheless, it shows they are starting an exit strategy.  Exxon has a lot of patents that have nothing to do with petroleum.  Exxon has been active with commercial showing what a great company it is after all.  If we can bet on one thing, Exxon is moving away from retail after the bad publicity it is getting.  They will most likely hide for some time, while developing new "green" technology in order to be better placed in tomorrow's new market.

Boycotting companies for one day makes no sense.  Boycotting one company for one month makes more sense.  Boycotting it always until prices are more reasonable makes even more sense.  Doing this to Exxon/Mobile might be too little, too late.  And after all, high gas prices are doing wonderful things to the environment.  There is less driving, less polluting, more environment consciousness, more interest in electrical cars.  Nonetheless, it is a good move to see people reclaiming the inherent power they always had… the credit card!
