Working From Home, A Balancing Act

Discuss on ooVoo

Working from home is a dream to some, but it requires a lot of thinking and planning.

I'll admit, like most anyone, I love to work from home.  It's second nature to me.  I also understand some people are not like that and prefer the comfort of an office.  I like having an office to go to but prefer being home.  I am my own boss and surviving next month is ample motivation, even if I worked for a company.  It takes a special mindset to work from home.

So what do you need to do in order to efficiently work from home?  First of all, make sure it is what you really want to do.  Often enough, we are more in love with the idea than the actual day-to-day aspect of it.

Working from home takes a lot of planning and thinking.  You need to have a corner, ideally a room that has to be your office.  You go there and work.  You also need to set your self a time schedule when you are working and when you take breaks.

It's so easy to take a break at home.  Opportunities abound.  Coffee is near, tea is only a few steps away.  Don't feel like working?  Well, there is always TV staring at you, inviting you to waste more time.  Feel claustrophobic?  That walk outside or in the garden sound so inviting.

Friends often think since you are home, you must be free.  I found
that a little training goes a log way.  They need to know that as much
as you don't bother them "at work", at home during the day, you are "at
work".

In conclusion, you need to be fully committed that in your work space, you work.  Remind yourself you have to achieve what you set out for each day.  You will get phone calls, and email will be blinking.  The question to keep in mind is: "Does this actually help me achieve my daily goal?"  If not, let it wait.

Working at home can be fulfilling but don't make the mistake to think you'll work less.  You will work more at first.  You will eventually work longer without interruptions.  As time progress, you will become very adept at shutting yourself off from distractions.  Then, working from home makes a lot of sense.  Until then, pace yourself, think it through and really plan it well.
