The True Meaning Of Networking

Discuss on ooVoo

Don’t hook, hub! S’cuze me?

How many of you don’t like these people who come to you directly at networking events, or any event for that matter of fact and without even knowing who you are start selling their products? We all do. It’s a shame because the true meaning of networking is building connections. True networking is about hubbing. Hum, I’m marketing that word. I’m hubbing. But I digress…. People who try to hook you directly are missing the point and just plain old, turn off anyone. It might be this dubious logic that pitch to a hundred so that even if one reacts positively it’s a win, just doesn’t work anymore.

I’ve always felt like a hub of relationships and possibilities. When I walk into a room or a networking event, my thoughts are about who can be useful for who? I love to get to know people and my thoughts automatically gear into how can this person benefit from someone else I met or myself and my services. I love connecting people. I love the endless possibilities that ultimately form the giant mosaic we are, Life.

Long Beach Grand Prix 2008

Wow, it’s over and I can’t believe how quickly things come and go after waiting for it all year.

Yes, it’s taken me that long to write about it. The highlights were certainly the electric Tesla car. Tesla_1

I had no idea it was so pretty and correctly proportioned in the sea of over-sized, super-size me cars. It was refreshing to see people going straight to the source, electricity which we already have plenty on the grid instead of a round-about way as in various hybrid systems. Hybrids are just another way for oil companies to cash in on producing electricity when we should develop geo-thermal turbines and other natural viable system whose technology exists today. Using gas to create hydrogen to create electricity is just self defeating for cars, will not solve dependency on oil and will still ake oil corporations a lot of money and not change the price of anything. It’s a must for space programs, not for cars.

The other highlight was meeting Bernard Darniche, many times champion of the intensive Tour de Corse. Bernard_darniche_and_nick
A wonderful great guy with a frank smile. I also met Nelson Philippe the Champ Car young driver. Very nice guy also.

The absolutely breathtaking Mazda working prototype shown here. Mazda_proto_6 Pure beauty!

I spoke to the Motul representatives who are bringing that great engine oil brand to the US market for cars again. Over here, Motul is mostly known for its motorcycle oils but in Europe it is known for its fantastic oil quality. My next Spider oil change will be Motul with a Wixx (spelled right?) oild filter. They have a special coating system that leaves the engine lubricated event at rest. That saves a lot of start up stress on cams and moving parts.

And finally an acknowledgment for the people who turned me on to the electric car, the folks over at Plug In America. They are the folks behind the very insightful movie Who Killed The Electric Car. I hope to interview them soon as well as some folks from the Tesla world. In the meantime, please go and visit their site, pluginamerica.org. And a special thank to Lindsey (hope I am not butchering your name) for turning me on to the Tesla. No one has ever had such a spark in their eyes as she did talking about electric cars. She has successfully communicated it to me… Darn!

Lastly my thought on this 2008 GP is that the hype of Green Is In will be heard over and over again. I wasn’t sold because we live in a society that automatically over-hypes anything for marketing purpose but smart green will take over. I am a performance car lover and being ecologically aware, I have a hard time driving my old cars and feel environmentally good. The trick was substituting a clean engine that offers performances to my noisy but fun gas cars. I found the answer in the electric car. Complete, unadulterated torque from 1 rpm to the limit. Take the Tesla 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds and you will understand this is a no brainer for tomorrow. Take these things into consideration and you realize how futile the hybrid, especially ethanol (drives the prices of raw food up) and hydrogen (still uses oil to make electricity) makes zero sense in the long run for cars. The technology is here, buy an electric vehicle! I know my next “new” car will be electric considering the performances.

5 Years Without TV And Feeling Smarter!

Discuss on ooVoo

We have been living 5 years without a TV and we just don’t miss it.

It’s always the same, when we travel the first thing I do checking in a hotel is flick on the TV set. The first reaction is a let down, so many commercial breaks, all too often and of very poor quality. Then I start to feel hopeful because, after all there are another 999 channels available. That hope soon turns to another disappointment. These other channels are all the same, either repeats or carbon copies of previous ones, too much sports, not enough interesting subjects and those darn commercial breaks!

Finally I turn it off. You see we got used to having no TV which means we read a lot. We also know where to go on the Internet to get the news. I also have learned to get the news I care about and leave the fear mongers to themselves and look all empathetic while earning a lot of money to report horrors.

When people ask what we do with our time, we say it is filled with a lot of things to do. We really would be wasting our time watching TV. Plus, we’ve gotten into the habit of renting movies and TV shows and we are very used to not have to be interrupted with those lame, oh so lame commercials.

Of course, we are not the only ones. Shavar at PFAdvice does not only the same but shares some hints as to what to do. Read it here.

Organic Foods And The Current Trend

Discuss on ooVoo

It’s hard not to notice organics labels anywhere nowadays.

It used to be local food shop proudly displayed organics and it meant more than it does now. However, we can still by quality foods with a little know-how. After all, when even Wall-Mart has “organic” ice cream, the bottom line is that organic junk food is still just that, junk food.

When Whole Foods bought out Wild Oats, they were being probed by the Federal Trace Commission (FTC) because they were eliminating a healthy competition in an already expensive organic food market. It was said it would give Whole Foods unilateral market power resulting in higher prices and reduced quality, service and choice for consumers. You chose when you walk in a Whole Foods store that used to be Wild Oats. Is it true?

Unfortunately, large corporation turned organic food into a $16-billion business, with sales growing by 20% a year and the downside is that it becomes about maximizing profits. This can mean sacrificing ethics and quality, at a benefit for them and a higher price for consumers.

Finally buying local is often better than buying organic. You get fresher foods and didn’t use excess fuel to be transported long distances as with those big supermarkets. Also local farmer’s markets are somewhat less expensive since the rising fuel costs inevitably get passed down the line to the end consumer. At least I found it be to be here with our Long Beach ones.

Things to be careful with healthy big supermarkets: MSG and rBGH. Meats and Poultry accumulate toxins. Buy organic and grass-fed exclusively, especially the three months before they are slaughtered, as this is when they are typically given grains to fatten them up. For chickens, it would be important to make sure they are cage-free, or free-range, chickens.

Fresh produce buy local. It saves gas and pollution.

An additional concern that was recently raised by the Organic Consumer’s Association is that a whopping 50 percent of “natural” and “organic” products were found to be contaminated with 1,4 Dioxane – a petrochemical carcinogen. The results of their testing of 100 “organic” personal care products are listed on their website and worth checking out to make sure you’re actually getting what you think you’re paying for. And by the way, ORGANIC should be 100%. So products that are 50% are not, even 99%.

The Power To Say “No!”

Discuss on ooVoo

It’s easy to say yes and get overwhelmed with good intentions. It’s a little harder to keep your reserve tank full. Sometimes, you just need to say: “No!” Learning how to do it takes time and understanding of yourself.

It’s hard. You don’t want to disappoint, you don’t want to let down, you don’t want to be seen as someone who is not out there helping out, but the last thing you would want to be is someone who is overstretched and low on personal resources. It takes a while before you reach that state when you can calmly look at any given situation and say yes or no, not out of duty, but out of your own sense of personal reserves. It takes a good understanding of yourself.

So the questions that need some answers become, what are your personal boundaries? Where do you say OK? Where do you put on the breaks? Understanding your needs helps you better define your boundaries and know what you will and will not take from people in your life. Once you know that, it becomes very easy to know when to say yes or no.

As I’ve mentioned here before, I would love to work with women in between their mid-50s and 70s. That generation had a tremendous burden put on them. It was a throwback of the days when women were expected to be stay at home moms and take care of the family. Eventually it became a devotion of their entire existence to others and many are left burned out or very low on reserves. It dawned on me when this lady had tears in her eyes as I acknowledged her for raising a family, something not too many men of her generation could have done. She had never been recognized. What was worse, she had never recognized herself.

I think there is a whole generation out there that need to take a long look at their selves and realize they have done an incredible job. I hope to work with these women. After all, you gave to us, now let us give you time and space. You know us, but do we know you?

Long Beach Grand Prix 2008

Discuss on ooVoo

The Long Beach Grand Prix 2008 is off to a good start.

I love this event. I wait for it all year long. Though my history with the LB GP is filled with frustration, it is an exciting moment of our lives in Long Beach. So why frustrating? 4 years ago at the 30th Anniversary, I missed the old car racing. 3 years ago I threw my back out and had to give the tickets away. 2 and 1 year(s) ago I had all inclusive tickets given to me from a friend but didn’t know I could go in the stands and paddocks! This year, I called my friend too late who had given her tickets away… boohoo, snif, snif!

However, I love Fridays for two reasons, I meet a lot of people and I love the American Le Mans Series. I’m not an F1 or Indy Car race fan though I like it’s technical subtleties. I’m really more of a prototype and GT2 fan. I love these long streamlined endurance racers. I love these GT cars stripped and prepped for race. That is my fun.

The part I most look forward to is the inside action at the GP. I love talking to vendor, snooping around, getting the latest news and this year was rich. First of all, Green Is In! Yes, even the gas guzzler producers of yesterday (the infamous Detroit boys and the Japanese makers) are back with a vengeance with “green” technologies. Hey, a hype is a hype as long as they make a buck! Hydrogen, ethanol and hybrid powered vehicles still makes no sense, yet is a step in the right direction. Hydrogen is a ridiculous hype. It costs more to create hydrogen than to plug directly into the electric grid. It’s just a way for car makers and their backers, the oil consortium to make money on oil. Let’s just go to the electricity directly and forgo the extra steps. And for those who bravely clamor ethanol, two thing; corn ethanol is not the best way to do it (energy rating to power wise), sugar cane is much better and cheaper. To top it all, as if we needed it, corn ethanol is driving the price of food (check your grocery bills from a year ago). So please, do the math and go electric and skip the hybrids. You’re only giving money to the people who tied us to oil in the first place.

Finally, I admit, I can’t believe I am saying but I am in love with a non-gasoline, non-Italian car. I saw the electric Tesla at last and it is beautiful! I have to thank one of the ladies behind the famous Who Killed The Electric Car movie for doing a great job at expressing why I will fall in love with electric cars. The passion in her eyes light mine. Anyone who has heard about the Tesla and only seen pictures, I can only say one thing, it is much prettier live. It is small and beautiful. I would sink $100,000 into it. I just don’t have it ;)

Finally, I met Nelson Phillipe, the young French driver who took the LB GP by surprise a few years ago driving powerful cars at the age of 17.

I’ll have more on everything at the end of the weekend with pictures and all.

There Is A Shift Coming

Discuss on ooVoo

There is a shift coming. For those of us who have felt it since birth, there is something coming.

I’ve always felt something coming for a long time. Though at times it feels like a tease, and at other times it feels right there, the signs are clear. This might sound a little out there but to me, and I know others, it’s a recurrent feeling.

And so pops yet another empowering movie, The Shift. I like this phase of movies we have had since What The Bleep Do We Know, then The Secret, etc. The Shift seems like a gathering of like minded people getting together to move awareness in a future based direction. I’m only hoping the brash, over the board marketing doesn’t kick in and the true message actually gets through: “Who are you and what do you want to do?”

It feels good being asked those questions. They are the fundamentals of coaching.

March Home Sales Half As Less As Normal

Discuss on ooVoo

The March numbers are out according to DataQuick and they were predictable, half as less as February.

“The seasonal boost in sales between February and March was less than half its normal level and a record low. The weak start to the home buying season also saw another record dive in the median sales price, the result of depreciation, slow sales for higher-priced abodes and growing sales for discounted homes fresh out of foreclosure.”

The house I was going to help sell last year but eventually went a Realtor who told the owner he could get a million for it finally went off market after a year of unsuccessful tries and a few Realtors. Funny thing is that had the owner listened to me, he would have made more money than he can get in this current market. Now he is stuck with two homes…

“A total of 12,808 new and resale houses and condos sold in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties in March. That was up 18.8 percent from 10,777 the previous month but down 41.4 percent from 21,856 in March 2007, according to DataQuick Information Systems.”

That’s a pretty steep number in one year, almost half as less. And to think we still hear the same cheerleaders talking about the bottom of the wave. What world are they living in? The market is readjusting and will readjust until prices catch up with consumer’s buying power which is very weak considering our current economy. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that. In the meantime, hold on tight!

Friday Email-less Day

Discuss on ooVoo

I just heard this and thought finally a company is doing something concrete about spam.

OK, OK, you are probably bored with this subject of spam but it really is an annoying thing. I read 75% of Internet traffic is spam! Something as wonderful as email has turned into a gateway for shoddy people to sucker others. I still remember the first time I heard of this new thing called electronic mail. It was in 1994. I wanted one. I got one and it was way cool. Now everyone has an email and all email accounts are spoiled with spam. Frankly said I like the way my body is. I don’t need designer shoes nor watches, nor Lords knows what other International Lottery and transfer of funds from unknown people.

Well, I just heard of a company that is having a Friday without email. Employees are asked not to use email and those who do are frowned upon! I thought how wonderful this is. It’s a great way to get people to let go of emails. It’s a neat way to go cold turkey with technology. Do you remember the last time you had no cell phones and no laptops? I do, it was in the early 90s. It’s also a great way to curb down on spam. It could be that solution that addresses a lot of problems. Something to watch out for in the future.

Little Faith In Traditional Banks

Discuss on ooVoo

I’m closing my Washington Mutual account soon.

I’ve never had much sympathy for big banks but with the latest turmoils at Wamu, see here, I decided to give my money to a local Credit Union. And why not?

After 4 decades of banks telling the government to not interfere, the latest Wamu problems has pushed them to ask for help after lending money to dubious people. How can I trust a bank that does that? When I worked in real estate I saw how wrong it was pushing loans into most people’s hands when clearly they didn’t have much to show for. If at my little level I can see that, I would expect my bank to be wiser.

I opened an account with a local credit union with a checking account that earns money with the minimum on it being $50. After all, it is my way of saying enough is enough. It is also my way of investing directly into my community.

Our banking system is out of control and after being part of the mess we are in, they don’t need my money. If they are being bailed out because of their mistakes then this will be done without my help. Surely, no one would give me that break if I was in that situation. My, how empowering!
