The “R” Word Through The Decades

Calculated Risk did a little snooping in time to see how our financial fearless leaders dealt with reality. The results were as puzzling as we might expect. Those experts either cannot tell the truth for fear of fear or they are so far off removed from reality, they cannot grasp it anymore. You chose:

“For the recession that started in April 1960:

“By and large, however, the economy seems quite solid.”
Federal Open Market Committee, May 1960

“[Chairman Martin] was by no means convinced that the situation was serious.”
Federal Open Market Committee, July 1960

“The Chairman reiterated his views … There was a declining picture, … but the economy was not going over a precipice by any means.”
Federal Open Market Committee, October 1960

For the recession that began in July 1990:

“In the very near term there’s little evidence that I can see to suggest the economy is tilting over [into recession].”
Chairman Greenspan, July 1990

“…those who argue that we are already in a recession I think are reasonably certain to be wrong.”
Greenspan, August 1990

“… the economy has not yet slipped into recession.”
Greenspan, October 1990″

And you have probably seen how much Greenspan is defending himself lately…

Stress At Work, The Biggest Productivity Zapper, Part 1

Discuss on ooVoo

Everyone knows it, but little is done about it. What a shame considering the boost in productivity curbing down stress would bring.

We all know job stress is a serious threat to the health of workers, companies and everyone’s surroundings. It zaps efficiency and productivity of so many organizations. It is true that much has been done and at the very least stress is being acknowledged as the culprit. Researches have been conducted and have pointed to how stress has gone up in the workplace these last years despite recognizing it.

It’s odd that we know how destructive stress is at work, completely self defeating and a constant company sabotage, yet how little is being done. There are companies that have taken creative solutions such as beautifying the work space, creating pleasant gardens, having livelier staff rooms but is the core issue really addressed here? Most likely not. Do people still take an hour off at lunch to “unplug” and eat healthy food?

Hiring coaches is a great dynamic step forward as we need to make the workplace more dynamic for enthusiastic people to meet with a common interest aligned with the company’s goals. In other words, filling out the positions in order to keep the company alive is like feeding poor quality gasoline in an engine that could otherwise win races.
