Yikes, I thought I had something planned for this morning…
Which brings me to discipline and having a schedule. When you work from home, or decide to, it is very important to build discipline and a schedule. Most people who work from home, or would like to usually don’t like routine and would rather set their own pace. In order to set your pace, you have to know how you function.
I make a commitment to get dressed after my morning after meditation. If I sit all day in front of my computer in my sweats, I’m liable to take it easy and even slip into one of the let’s-watch-Star-Trek fancy. Getting dressed, and even shaving gives you a sense of getting ready for work. It makes you treat it as such.
I think it is also crucial to set a schedule of sorts. It is important to have a guideline and something you can rely on. I start my work day with the obvious, emails, get rid of the retarded spam. Then I go to my Gmail account I use for my general info, subscriptions and newsletters. I pick out the news and such. After that I have a few ideas for the blog. By then, it is about 9:30 and I can get to other tasks.
This gives me a frame of reference in the morning, between 8 and 12, I have two things to do. One is keeping up with the day, setting events in order and tackling projects. I take a short break after that to eat. Depending on my sessions for the day, I then do my favorite thing, socialize, network.
I love to go to Polly’s as you are very well aware of. Polly’s is a great place. It’s all encompassing. The range of people going there is wide and varied, it’s not as targeted as other coffee shops. After this, I go to the gym, or vice versa. The gym offers another great place to socialize. I talk to people in the steam room. It’s mostly business and it is fun to hear different points of views. In fact, I never realized how much men talk. Put them in a jacuzzi, steam room or sauna and it is constant talk.
Getting yourself set with a schedule helps you stay on track. But you need discipline. Stick to it. Determine it. Fit it to your temperament. Don’t try to fit a round in a square. Make resolutions not to answer non-business related emails or phone calls. If you need a break, look around and see if something needs cleaning or organizing. Those are the things I do and have developed over time. It works with a little insight as to how you function. Because after all, it is about what you want to do…
