Too Many Financial Woes, Almost Too Perfect

Discuss on ooVoo

I don’t know about you but it seems there are too many problems in the financial sector that should have have failsafe systems to avoid them. It almost sounds too perfect.

The latest news of Societe Generale’s trader single-handedly putting the company in greater debts then it is worth really makes me wonder if we are being being told the truth and what the heck is really going? It almost seems too perfect. A little bubble implosion in the local lending industry finally makes enough ripples to affect the national economy and now goes as far as disrupting other nations? I understand how it happen on a mathematical level. It just seems to obvious, especially when our so-called leaders and experts where telling us it would be contained.

Are we dealing with such incapable directors, presidents, CEO, Chairman, Owners and leaders who are incapable of containing problems and putting failsafe systems? Surely the problem of this single mid-level trader endangering an entire company should never have happened and definitely stretches the imagination. How could it have been? One person? What does it say about any other companies? Is greed that big we can’t even tell our bottoms from the horizons, to put it colorfully?

It just seems like dominoes have been put into place and someone/something pushed one over and everything falls apart. It just seems too far fetched, almost too well constructed. It has a nasty feel of what happened less than a hundred years ago when the economy crumbled and gave the perfect setting for WWII. Maybe I am paranoid but I know I can detect patterns when I see them. This seems almost too surreal to be natural.

Then again, I believe it is high time we change and stop feuding. I believe it is time to not listen to politicians quarreling and demand more maturity from them. Watching Clinton and Obama fight makes me frightened to think any of those two could lead our nation tomorrow. Is this all they have to offer, fights? Surely we have enough of that. I want more from my leaders, mostly maturity. And anyway, we will have to change sooner or later. It can’t go on like this. Nothing rests, everything changes, everything vibrates. We live in a world filled with yesterdays’ dogmas and rules. Societies evolve and it is time to change the way we think and do business. Maybe it is time to start cooperating instead on acting on the primal competition nerve. I don’t know about you but I am tired of competing. I want to cooperate and move forward now. It’s high time we kick our civilization into higher gears. I am sure those aliens watching us are either laughing or shaking their heads.

Monster Jam Appeals To Some

Discuss on ooVoo

Hum, I’m thinking, I’m thinking… Hum, well Monster Jam is.. well, it’s about… it’s really… hum, big trucks, loud noise and running in circles. I think… But wait, there is more.

We went out Saturday night with some Japanese friends of ours who were mystified by the concept of Monster Jam. I also felt we should see this thing once in our life. And indeed, once in my life was enough. Don’t get me wrong, I love cars and racing but I didn’t get the subtleties of trucks with big wheels jumping on broken cars and running in circles.

It was strange. I looked around and I couldn’t relate to the crowd. I wanted a hot dog but knowing what are in them are a turn off. I looked at the field and saw the National Reserve holding our flag walking in mud. There was an attempt to raise our patriotic feeling and a lot of screaming. It was strange and disturbing.

Then the trucks, I guess we shouldn’t call them trucks. In fact, they are huge tubular chassis sporting big polluting engines on even bigger tires. They vaguely resemble current trucks. The first part of the show was two trucks going at it in a one pass circle. That was it. The second part was much more fun, little quad-like machines raced around a more interesting track. It was more like racing. The vehicles were low to the ground but still needed enough clearance to make it across the bumps. There was another race with bigger trucks on the same track.

Those two last races were interesting. It felt like MotoCross. Then it was back to the monster trucks again and this time it was the free-style part of the show. They jumped up and down and went in circle in an inferno of noise.

It was weird, to say the least. It wasn’t about racing, nor about sports. It was about pitting one favorite driver against another. This is the part I don’t get. I can’t get excited about things I can’t or have not participated in. I love Rugby because I played it. I love old cars, because I have them.

The fun parts of the evening was that the girls had the best trucks. They were very creative and funny as heck. They drove them much more subtly than the guys.

It was a very foreign experience for me. I felt I was on another planet. I’m glad I did it once. It also taught me how important it is to observe and remain neutral. Coaching has taught me that. it feels great.

Even Experts Get It Wrong, And Often!

I stumbled on this Seeking Alpha post that speaks my language, calling for us to beware of expert predictions.

It’s worth a read. It helps puts things into perspective. The problem is that people are manipulated into thinking whatever it takes to spend money. the real question anyone should ask themselves is: “What do I really want?”. Sounds familiar? that’s coaching.

City Looks Into Salary Increases

Discuss on ooVoo

The Budget Oversight Committee will look to limit the salary increases it allows.

It looks like the city of Long Beach is serious about this issue that has aroused a lot of concern. The Budget Oversight Committee is expected to review tomorrow (January 29) an amendment to the salary ordinance, which will require the city manager to notify the city council of salary increases greater than “cost of living,” or the Consumer Price Index. Under the current ordinance, the city manager can raise annual salaries by up to seven percent. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. at Long Beach City Council Chambers, 333 W. Ocean Blvd.

Conforming Loan Raised

Discuss on ooVoo

“The package agreed upon by Congress would temporarily allow Fannie and Freddie to buy or guarantee mortgages as high as $729,750 in cities with high housing prices, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.” according to the Wall Street Journal.

This could change the playing field a little for first time buyers, if the rates remain affordable. The $729,750 limit would expire Dec. 31, but permanent for loans guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration. The current FHA is limited to $367,000.

One easy prediction about this year is that it will be an interesting one.

Workshop Synergy

Discuss on ooVoo

I went to Donna Schiller‘s workshop on Saturday and it was fun.

I think we forget sometimes how much you can get out from a workshop. One obvious element is learning about something. I think my next one will be about those things that drain us constantly and what we tolerate but I digress.

Workshops have another value, it builds up a synergy that I think can be a great motivation for businesses. When you go to workshops, you meet others and get a glimpse into their lives. It makes you realize you are not alone after all, and certainly others have concerns you might share. What you can get out of it are different points of views. How do others react in front of similar obstacles? What have they found out? I think the most precious jewel is the feedback. And this particularly links back to why coaching is such an important part of life, getting feedback.

One reason why we have coaches is to have someone to lay out our thoughts with. That alone opens up great possibilities. Being in a group, others can give you feedback and might see something that is eluding you.

I love workshops and I wil make it a priority to have one every two months to start with.

Lower Rates, Higher Foreclosures

Discuss on ooVoo

It’s funny how I mentioned there were little news in the real estate market. That was until the Feds reacted to lower rates.

In this post from Calculated Risk, quotes Mathew Padilla saying: “We are nearing historic lows on these rates”. Will the fact that some lenders offering low rates of 5% for a 30-year fixed mortgage with a one-point fee on a conforming loan, which is up to $417,000 kick start the economy? It’s hard to tell yet.

With Californian foreclosures on the rise, the measures taken haven’t fully contained the problem. And judging from the increased level of spam from lenders I am getting, we are not out of the woods just yet.

Internet TV = Freedom and Education

Discuss on ooVoo

Watching shows on Miro from the Internet is the freedom I wanted when I watched TV but couldn’t chose.

With TV you have little choice but what is available and depending on whether you pay for premium channels or not. Though Miro doesn’t get everything that’s on TV and it being free, most of the shows are either indie productions or scientific. I’ve been watching a lot of NASA shows and other educational from Discovery. The great thing is I can download what I want and watch it when I want.

It’s really amazing to see what scientists are doing without much being reported on the news. While the battles rages with what politicians are saying and often won’t do, many scientist quietly work away making our lives better or revealing hidden secrets of the universe. It really makes you respect these people. When I watch the latest blurbs of how the Clintons are having it with the Obama clan, and much the same on the other side, it is sad to think these people will be our leaders tomorrow. Watching scientist with great educations making breakthroughs, working together with different cultures, it makes you wonder why we are shackled by politicians.

Watching these scientist gives me hope that people will eventually say: “Enough is enough.” with politicians. Either shape up or let others do something about making our lives better. I’ve develop an even greater respect for scientists watching these shows. And, it keeps me focused on relevant things instead of sterile political debates.

December Numbers Closing The Year

Discuss on ooVoo

Well, at last 2007 is over with the latest numbers for that last month.

Traditionally, that month is slow. We also know that one month isn’t accurate enough to draw a trend. You have to look at the whole year and match the numbers with the previous one.

Calculated Risk posted these two posts here, and here on the December numbers.

The first post talks about the expected slip: “Existing-home sales – including single-family, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – slipped 2.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate1 of 4.89 million units in December from a pace of 5.00 million in November, and are 22.0 percent below the 6.27 million-unit level in December 2006.” We can now see how the credit crunch has impacted the market.

The second post hints at numbers pointing to higher surplus as prices decline, an obvious result. The extrapolation would suggest sales will slow a little more.
