How does Life Coaching work anyway?
There was a good
post on the Coach Connection Blog that tackles this recurrent question, what is it like? In fact, I have a friend who is currently asking me the same question. It’s hard to answer because it depends. It depends who you are coaching and for what. It is always different. However, there are things you will find.
I liked this part on the post: “What happens between you and your life coach? First, your life coach will be your EQUAL PARTNER. ” Yes, equal partner. Not aiming at your particular success but with you. If you want riches, great. I want your happiness, success and whatever makes you you.
I also liked the part about what your coach will NOT do:
NOT tell you what to do (you are the boss, not your coach)
NOT advise you (you are the true expert, not your coach)
NOT do any work for you (it is your life and career, not your coach’s)
NOT have you defend or justify yourself (Coaching is a mirror reflection process of discovery on your terms. You are who you are without having to defend you)
NOT judge or evaluate you. (Coaching is about discovering the truth of you, without judgment or superiority by your coach)
NOT criticize or critique you. (It is your life; your coach has no position to impose on you)
NOT attempt to teach you. (Life coaching is about extracting the truth from within you, not delivering more outside information to you.)
One thing I didn’t agree on but it was mostly the wording was that you will not discuss past relationships or anything deeply ingrained in the past. Here, I feel it is important to mention the past, talk about it but NOT dwell on it. Indeed, coaching is about the future, NOT the past.
Great post and most are valid for businesses.
