Perfect Rainy Day in Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

Today was the perfect Coaching and Real Estate day in Long Beach, it was raining!

Why? It all started at 8 am I realized we needed some groceries. Trader Joe’s opens at 8:30. I slipped into my jeans and sweater, and I went out into the rain. I had to uncover my beautiful Milano, fresh from a superb two week old detailing job from The Clean Freaks. More on that later. And off I went into the rain. I got back home just in time for my 9 am call.

I put away the groceries and slipped into my fleece pants and my Alfa Romeo sweatshirt. Slid into my comfy slippers and I had my first client call. At 10, I was ready for my second session and ended up at 11 with my last one. It was great listening to my clients while the rain tapped against the windows. I felt comfy, cozy, dry, warm. All I needed was a fire place with crackling noise. It was the perfect sessions.

One of my client is a Realtor. It was interesting to see the motivation of this person in the face of this market. And what was even better was to see how well my client is doing with a little positive attitude and thinking outside the box.

Just a great day.

Not Everything Is Bad In Real Estate, One ETF Proves It, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

If you listen to the real estate news, the world has melted, the crooks are off the hooks and nothing is left.

Hold that thought a little. Remember what is the number one question you should ask yourself when you read the news? “Who benefits from this?” In this case, Seeking Alpha’s Ryan Freund finds one ETF that profits from the slumping market.

When real estate exploded in 2000, many prospective homeowners bought beyond their range, current homeowners refinanced, and real-estate investors speculated as if their was no ceiling. In order to keep everyone happy, ever more sophisticated loan options cropped up, ARMs, etc. Anyone with a pulse could buy something over what they could afford. After all, they would make a profit, right? You know the rest of the story, look around today in the newspapers.

So who is coming on top now? One ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) that has been doing very well is the Ultra Short Financials Proshares (AMEX: SKF). For those who don’t know, an ETF trades like a stock, and is a hybrid between a stock and a fund. And yes, my wife works in that field, that’s why I am somewhat knowledgeable.

According to Ryan: “For every 1% the financial industry goes down, this ETF goes up 2%. In the past year, this stock has boasted more than a 40% return, doubling the loss of 20% for the financial industry.”

There you go, not everything is bad news. The trick is to look elsewhere when things go South.

Starting To Close The Year, Look Towards 2008, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

Wow, it is here, the last month of the year. A what a year it has been!

Coaching Tip:
A good thing to do at this stage is start scanning the last 11 months and pick out what you can appreciate from it, what you have learned but mostly what you are taking from it with you to pave the way for 2008.

Like most full moons, the last month of the calendar year is a great place to start the great year clean up. What have you learned? What are you grateful for? What are you taking into 2008 to pave the way to even greater success?

This is where I take off my coaching hat and talk about what I have learned so far this year. Hey, after all, it is my blog.

This year marks the end of a very tough and painful lesson; How to turn failure into success or the Art of Successful Failure.

This year I rekindled with my typical constant flow of enthusiasm and energy. I not only acknowledge it but respect it as an ally and a great strength.

This year also marks the official launch of my coaching practice but from an angle of truly wanting to provide people the chance and space to sort out their thoughts, dreams and goals.

So start you list of acknowledgments and appreciations. See what has worked and leave what didn’t behind. After al, what is right with you is the point. What is not is besides the point…

Four Lenders In California Freeze Their Rates, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

It’s a done deal, lenders in California are freezing their rates and I picked it up from Calculated Risk.

So what does this mean for us? Well only four lenders have agreed to this. They are Countrywide Financial Corp., GMAC Mortgage, Litton Loan Servicing and HomeEq Servicing. You notice that CountryWide has had its share of news lately and this move should come as no surprise as they are trying to attract people back.

You can check here for an update.

The Governor mentioned that our State is hit twice as hard as other states with foreclosures. Unless I missed it, I didn’t see anywhere how long the freeze would last more.

Hopefully this should inject some action in our desperatly slow market.

Trained Business & Life Coaches, The Difference, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

Business & Life Coaching is a very popular but nothing beats someone trained in Long Beach.

I notice that almost everyone has some sort of idea what Coaching is. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misconceptions which I’ve described in this blog. One of my pet peeves are people who attach coaching to their profession title. It makes them sound in and current but I feel it is deceptive. Business & Life Coaching, especially if you have been trained through a certified school or program, is very clear about what coaching is and isn’t.

A few “new” business niches I discovered lately were Mentor Coaching, Consultant Coach, and other people-to-people professions with coaching randomly thrown in the title. Unfortunately, I feel it is a disservice to both the original profession and coaching. And, and mostly and, it only confuses what true coaching in people’s minds. Coaching has been around for 15 years, even though it is evolving, it has a foundation.

If I had to chose a coach right now I would first listen to my gut feeling. Trusting life to provide the right person in front of me at the right time, I will attract the right person. You know that works, right? Then I would look for the tell tell signs as in with anyone I meet; do they talk too much, do they listen, do they understand what I am saying, are they fidgety, are they focused, are they present, are they in the “now”? Then I ask if they have any training and accreditation. That usually does it. And oh yes, referrals!

I am happy to study through CoachU for my certification. I have almost finished my CEP (in a few days) and I am working on my ACP. I am currently looking for clients so that I can get accredited. I need to Coach 100 hours and so far I have 4 clients and coming up on a quarter of logged hours. It’s not only fun to do something you love doing but something that does something good for society. It’s a great motivation.

How To Avoid Distractions, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

Avoiding distraction seems easy until you have to do it, like not answering the telephone.

And at times, we don’t even know what is a distraction. One pet peeve of mine is the phone ringing. And if you are like 99% of people out there, most of the time you’ll either get telemarketers or calls you could have waited for.

These calls drag you out of your productive mood, break the flow of your work, forces you to focus on other things and then you are left to yourself to gather up the energy and go back to what you were doing before. Of course, you are highly susceptible to indulge in a little break at that stage or just downright become lazy.

One answer is to not answer the phone. Yes, even you Business Owner. Sounds crazy but you’ll thank me. One thing I have started to do is if the phone number isn’t recognized or one of the “unknown caller” types, I don’t answer. I give myself a break every two hours, I will check voicemail then. And by the way, the same is true, even more so for emails.

Little things like that sound trivial but they help in many ways. I am less stressed about having to answer calls. I keep my productive moods much longer, sometimes for a whole day. I avoid temptations when friends call and ask to go out. It’s little things like that pave way for a greater tomorrow.

Freddie Mac, Who’s At The Helm? Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

Yahoo Finance reported a $2 billion loss for Freddie Mac.

Just a few numbers:

Core Business Growth Offset by Credit and Valuation Losses
Third Quarter Summary
- Third quarter loss of $2.0 billion reflects a higher provision for credit losses and losses on mark-to-market items.
- Provision for credit losses of $1.2 billion reflects the significant deterioration of mortgage credit as a result of continued weakness in the housing market.
- Total GAAP mark-to-market losses of $3.6 billion primarily include $1.5 billion in interest-rate related items and $2.3 billion in credit- related items.
- Fair value, before capital transactions, decreased by approximately $8.1 billion primarily due to widening of net mortgage-to-debt option- adjusted spreads and valuation losses on credit-related items.
- Increase in management and guarantee income reflects continued guarantee portfolio growth.

So who’s at the helm? Who was chosen to navigage this ship to the ground? Anything we can do to make sure we get serious and competent people?

The Economist and Recession, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

The Economist believes a recession is likely.

I’ve come to wonder if anyone has a clear definition of what a recession is and when it hits. Is there a barometer that “Good economy” and “Recession”? Though many experts say we are experiencing a session, as many others say we are not. Experts’ predictions are hazy at best, hitting the jackpot once on a while and claiming their 15 m.n. of fame and glory.

Calculate Risk had a post here on this subject last week.

Reading about a weakening dollar and less imports from China, one cannot help to wonder who does a weakening dollar serve? When you don’t understand why something is happening, one great question to ask is who would benefit from it. With a weak dollar, it would slow down China’s exponential growth. Just a thought.

The In-Between Generation, Long Beach

Discuss on ooVoo

There is one generation of women that really touch me, the late fifties to late seventies year olds.

I have always been more sensitive to women than man because, lucky them, their emotions are easier to sense. What is not always easy to grasp is the torment that generation of women went through and still endures. I guess seeing my Mother and women of her age still looking for approvals from their own Mothers makes me think they should be at an age when they need to congratulate themselves for the amazing job they have done. They should enjoy and reap their rewards. Instead, too many of them have low self-esteem.

My Mother raised us very well. My Father was working most of the time and we rarely spent time with us, except on weekends. My world growing up was my Mom’s. Virginia’s Mother raised her and her sister on her own. I can honestly say that both are exceptional women in today’s workforce, ethical, honest and just very wonderful people to be with. I have some pretty amazing ants, one of them is a Nurse in the O.R. of some hospital in Florida. All these women have achieved amazing feasts, raised great children, overcame obstacles my generations and the younger ones would break down in front, yet they have very little esteem for themselves. So what gives?

If you look at the relationship with their parents, you will quickly know why. Is it a generation problem? Probably. Those late eighty year old parents still function with different concepts of life that was once more or less adapted but have little to do with the current world. They were taught that a man was a man and women stayed in the kitchen and raised kids.

A man is a man. That always made me smile. What else can a man be? And obviously women have held positions with power and prestige in these last few decades, so this way of living is no longer relevant.

So what does it take to break the mold? It takes an honest look at yourself. It takes honest self-awareness. It takes a lot of courage in seeing what you have accomplished, and that you have accomplished a lot. You raised incredible children who mostly see the war of the sexes as a thing of the past. Yes, there are some dinausoraus that still linger, after all, we need a point of reference.

I feel it is high time our Mother’s generations realize what a fantastic job they have. It’s high time they establish themselves. It’s high time they tell us what they want, what they would like. It’s high time we get to know the real you, Mothers, not just the pleasers. Above all, it’s high time to tell your parents you are not children anymore. You can do it, you’ve achieved far bigger tasks and we are here to help you. And if you don’t know how to so this, give me a jingle :)

City Ordinance On Long Beach Noise

Discuss on ooVoo

A little late this morning, I slept in…

But, the Environmental Committee will discuss modifying construction hours on the 28th. The are meeting at 3 p.m. on November 28 to consider recommendations to change the city’s noise ordinance, such as modifying the hours when construction may start on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., and changing when power tools such as saws and lawn mowers may begin operating on weekends from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. on Sundays.

And you know, I am all for that, 8 a.m. instead of being woken up at 7… sounds good.
