If you don’t know what to do tomorrow, how about going to the Los Cerritos for a A Child’s Haunted Garden starting 10 a.m. till noon?

For children in grades 1-5; $5, you should reserve in advance.

Children will have a howling good time at the Rancho Los Cerritos “October is Arts Month” celebration! This workshop will allow children to explore and enjoy the natural haunts of our historic garden–which is sure to be a de-fright for all. The “Haunted Garden” will be the eerie setting for scary stories and a spooky scavenger hunt. For our younger guests and those who are a bit more squeamish, there will be arts and crafts that will allow them to create ghoulish clay ornaments and creepy headbands. Other activities will include a collage made from items found during the scavenger hunt, and historic Halloween games. Don’t let your children miss out on the opportunity to participate in a Halloween-themed afternoon at a gem in the heart of Long Beach. Refreshments will be served.

More Wetlands and Home Depot Shenanigans in Long Beach

In case you haven’t noticed, there are still plenty of shenanigans going on in regards to the fate of the East side wetlands and the infamous Home Depot project on 2nd Street and P.C.H..

I met up with Tarin Olsen, a local activist who keeps a sharp eye on what is happening behind the curtains and it was very revealing. As always, local politics are full of surprises. As far as the Wetlands, someone from the watch group spent the weekend inspecting the wetlands and reported that North of Shopkeeper, the retention basin was filled the entire bottom, and the 2 pumpkin patch ponds, to about 1/2 inch. Now mosquito fish and dragon flies show the toxicity is coming down. There were no report of illegal dumping. Some water crept back in the dikes along PCH and 2nd to about 25%. All off the illegally sprayed and destroyed plants are slowly rebounding, on both sides of 2nd. That’s for the good news.

3 Blue herons thrive, at shopkeeper while crude oil is seeping into a few puddles by the theater, next to shopkeeper. That’s for the good and bad news.

There was what seems to be an private Helicopter that landed on the Home Depot parcel that has no landing pad. It hovered below power line level and kicked up toxic dust. Apparently, brimming with confidence, a big amount of dirt has been exported without a permit, at the site. There still seems to be a lot of activity there and it seems the negative press is being quieted while starting the foundation work for Home Depot.

I can’t say, in all honesty, I am for that Home Depot. How many Home Depots do I need in our fairly small city, 3? There are 2 in Signal Hill, a five minute drive for me, both are within eye sight. Putting Home Depot on one of the last wildlife parts of Long Beach is just bad sense. We need to beautify one of our last wildlife place, not sprout yet another big surface. There is the concern of pollution and toxicity. Would I want a Home Depot built on top of a polluted soil? We have enough pollution as is without risking further health problems. Lastly, since the Signal Hill Depots are 5 minutes away from Belmont Heights, this Home Depot would be more if you take into consideration the exponential traffic around 2nd Street and P.C.H. it would cause.

And I really like ACE in the Shore :)
