We’ll To Vote On Big-Box Ban In 2008!

The Long Beach City Council voted 6-1 during a January 2 meeting to let residents decide on an ordinance banning big-box superstores (that sell groceries) on the June 2008 ballot. Third District Councilmember Gary DeLong opposed the measure and moved to directly repeal the law, but the motion failed. In December, the city clerk verified more than 21,000 signatures gathered in a Wal-Mart-sponsored petition drive – enough to force a ballot referendum.

Florida having enjoyed three solid months of gains, fell in December effecting consumer confidence.  A trickling effect indeed.

Chris McCarty, director of University of Florida survey found that Florida consumer are optimistic about the economy at present but expect a decline in their finances and overall economy over the next year.  It was more pronounced among senior citizens and low-income households.  Overall, consumer confidence is two points lower than it was a year ago, he said.

In 2006, consumer confidence was driven by gasoline prices.  Sales data show that all markets in Florida are experiencing lower sales of both existing homes and condos, and in many markets the median home price is declining.

The reason why I include Florida is that it is one of the big real estate market of the nation.  What happens here, there and NY greatly influences the nation.  You can read more here.
